Resolved Question

Why do dogs sometimes become "stuck" when mating? How can one get them "unstuck"?

I saw two "stuck" dogs in the street this weekend, and wondered what causes this. On another topic, I cannot believe that in today's day and age you still get people who do not sterilize their domestic animals and let them roam the streets! A bitch in our cul-de-sac is on heat and there are hoards of all shapes and sizes of dogs mating. The noise is awful! For someone who is not fond of dogs, this is not a pretty site! 69 mths ago

Getting stuck together is normal. Do NOT ice them to get them apart. The male is Supposed to swell up and get stuck inside the female for 2 to 30 minutes. At this time if you feel the Sire and Dam in this area you will feel pulsating. When you hear someone say they got a 13 minute tie, this means they were locked together for 13 minutes.

I've never seen it myself, but if I were you, I'd try turning the garden hose on them.

Heard of it before, thanks to Prof Thumbsie we all now know why this sometimes happens. Thank you Thumbsie!

Not sometimes, it's the way dogs always mate. By trying to get them apart you can do grievous harm to the poor dog. Pouring water over them is cruel, as they cannot separate once they have tied. Leave them be.
